The approximate Laplace operator resulting from folding with filter [-1 2 -1] can be improved by using the Shannon interpolation formula. We get the Toeplitz matrix from the sequence $2, 12/\pi^2\cdot -1^n\cdot / n^2$ of the 2nd derivative of the cardinal sine at multiples of $\pi$.
